Bacteria

Information

  • Bacteria is classified as being prokaryotic. Most bacteria don't make their own food. That means they have to rely on other organisms to provide them with food. These bacteria have to break down, or decompose, other living things to obtain energy.
  • When most people hear the word bacteria, they think of something that is bad for you. In fact, very few bacteria cause illness.
  • Some bacteria actually help you! Without the help of bacteria, you wouldn't even have the cheese for your favorite slice of pizza!
  • There are three different shapes of bacteria: spheres, rods (seen below) and spirals.
  • Note: This kingdom is often referred to as the Monera Kingdom. Recently, a new type of bacteria has been discovered. Because of this discovery many scientists believe the Bacteria Kingdom should be divided into 2 bacteria kingdoms known as Eubacteria (common bacteria) and Archaebacteria (this is the newly discovered bacteria that live in extreme environments such as hot sulfur springs).

Did You Know That?
Species of bacteria known as Chlamydia & Rickettsia are the smallest living things, being only a few hundred atoms across.
