Classification of Animals
Arthropod Phylum - Arachnids

Information Safari Sally Image
  • Spiders, scorpions, mites and ticks are arachnids (uh RAK nudz).
  • They have two body sections, four pairs of legs and no antennae. You can tell the difference between this group and insects because arachnids have 8 legs.
  • Daddy Long Legs are arachnids, but they are not spiders! They are a special type of arachnid that have only one body segment instead of two.
  • Spiders cannot chew their food. Using a pair of fangs, a spider injects a poison into its prey; the poison paralyzes the prey. Then, the spider releases enzymes that turn the prey into a liquid! Yuck!
Did You Know That?
Not all animals have their "ears" on their heads. Spiders and crickets (insects) have them on their legs! (Source: Sharks Have No Bones)
