The Invertebrate Marketing - the store without a backbone!

scorpionThis is your first day of work at the Invertebrate Market!

Your job is to draw the posters that are put in the store window showing the Catch of the Day.

To create your Catch of the Day poster, you need to find out what type of invertebrate is featured and then you must gather all of the information you can about this group.

Then, you are going to make a poster to put in the window of the store explaining to customers what the featured item is as well as giving a bit of information about it.

When you finish your poster, you will have to give a summary of the contents of your poster to the other workers in the store (your classmates) so that they will know all about this item too!

Part 1: First Day On the Job - Fill out Paperwork

  1. Get your assigned partner (you will work in pairs)
  2. Get your assigned Catch of the Day invertebrate group (will be provided in class)

Part 2: Gather Your Facts

To complete your Catch of the Day poster, you will need to know the following:

  1. What are the main features of this type of invertebrate? If your invertebrate has a unique name, explain what it means.
  2. Where did you find this type of invertebrate? ( Where do they usually live?) Mention all the different places that they live in. For example - "Found fresh today in the ocean, but also found in lakes, rivers, streams, or swamps."
  3. List the different types of animals that belong to your invertebrate group. Draw and name at least 2 of them.

Part 3: Invertebrate Research

Here are some sources that will help you gather information:

  • Life Science Safari - Travel with Safari Sally in search of different types of invertebrates and their special features
  • refer to your special type of invertebrate in one of the sections in pages 348-394 in your textbook
  • you can also ask Mrs. Vilenski about the invertebrate books that she has set aside for this project

wormsPart 4: On Sale Today!

Share the information you have discovered by completing the Catch of the Day Poster for your invertebrate. The poster should include:

  • Drawings and names of at least 2 different types of animals that belong to your invertebrate group
  • Answers (in your own words!) to the questions in Part 2.
  • A work cited sheet taped to the back of your poster giving credit to the sources you used to gather your information

Remember that your poster should not contain one huge paragraph of words! Make it easy for people to read and understand your message!
